A flexible sigmoidoscopy is an examination of the lower bowel with a flexible fibreoptic instrument. This requires that the bowel be clean. Without proper bowel preparation, the examination will be less effective.
Purchase 1 Sachet of Pico-Salax and 1 Fleet Enema at your pharmacy. These are available without a prescription. Have only clear fluids for supper the night before your appointment and for breakfast on the day of your appointment.
If your appointment is before noon, take the Pico-Salax at 7:00pm on the evening before your appointment.
If your appointment is in the afternoon, you take the Pico-Salax at 8:00 am on the day of your appointment.
Follow the preparation with 2-3 glasses of clear fluid. Expect to have diarrhea for several hours.
Use a fleet enema 1-2 hours before your appointment. The instructions for its use are in the package. Due to the nature of the examination, you have the option of having the test performed with a nurse present.
